ThunderBolts take second straight extra innings loss

Slammers 3 Bolts2

JOLIET, IL – The Joliet Slammers tied the ThunderBolts in the seventh inning and won the game in extra innings for the second straight day in a 3-2 final at DuPage Medical Group Field Sunday afternoon.

The Slammers (20-31) put the first run on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Bordner walked and was bunted to second base. With one out, he moved up to third base on a balk and with two outs, another balk scored him.

In the top of the fourth, the ThunderBolts (22-28) answered and took the lead. Brynn Martinez extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single, Tyler Alamo doubled and Shane Carrier walked to load the bases with one out. Martinez tried to score on a pitch that got past the catcher, Bordner, but he was thrown out at the plate. The next pitch was a two-run double off the rightfield wall for Chase Cockrell.

Kenny Mathews pitched well and held that 2-1 lead into the seventh inning, when Joliet struck back. Chaz Meadows hit a leadoff double and later scored on a Bordner sacrifice fly. That sent the game into extra innings.

After the Bolts did not score in the top of the tenth, London Lindley began the bottom of the inning with a single. He moved to second on a bunt and to third on a throwing error. Dash Winningham came up next and hit a grounder to short that allowed Lindley to come home with the winning run.

Mario Samuel (2-1) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings out of the Joliet bullpen for the win and Joel Toribio tossed the tenth for the Bolts, taking the loss.

The ThunderBolts take the next four days off for the all-star break before returning to action on Friday against the River City Rascals. It’s Fright Night at Ozinga Field with a postgame fireworks show. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
