Schaumburg pulls away from ThunderBolts for game one win

Boomers 6 Bolts 2

SCHAUMBURG, IL – The ThunderBolts struck first but saw the Schaumburg Boomers score five consecutive runs to take game one of a three-game series, 6-2 at Boomers Stadium Tuesday night.

Three straight two-out base runners got the Bolts (20-25) on the board in the third inning. Tyler Straub walked, Brynn Martinez singled and Omar Obregon knocked in Straub with a base hit to make the score 1-0.

It didn’t take long for Schaumburg (23-23) to answer as they got two in the bottom of the inning. RBI singles for Jimmy Galusky and Matt Rose gave them a lead that they held for the rest of the night.

The Boomers ended up scoring in five out of six innings, adding one apiece in the third, sixth, seventh and eighth. Three of those runs scored on wild pitches with two of them coming in all the way from second base. They also got a run on an Alex Polston RBI single.

In the seventh inning, the ThunderBolts scored their second, and final, run as Chase Cockrell, who reached base three times in the game, drew a leadoff walk. He scored on a Tyler Straub double.

Gunnar Kines (3-3) pitched the Boomers to the win, tying his season-high with nine strikeouts and allowing two runs over seven innings. The loss was charged to Kenny Mathews (1-6), who allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts over six innings.

The ThunderBolts and Boomers continue their series on Wednesday evening as Cole Bellair (2-1, 4.91) pitches for the ThunderBolts against Schaumburg’s Matt Miller (2-1, 3.86). Both rookies will be making their fourth professional starts in the game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 and the radio broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
