ThunderBolts sweep doubleheader, series

MARION, IL – The ThunderBolts won two games over the Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park Sunday night, 6-1 and 6-0. It was the Bolts’ first sweep of Southern Illinois since 2008.

In game one, the ThunderBolts (19-31) got on the board in the first inning for the fourth consecutive game as they loaded the bases in front of a Tyler Straub sacrifice fly. They added three more runs in the third. Axel Johnson picked up an RBI single and two more runs scored when Blair Beck reached on an error.

Jake Welch ran into some early trouble on the mound but got some help from his defense with three double plays in the first three innings. Welch settled in and struck out seven through six shutout frames.

Ronnie Healy added to the lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run double that put the ThunderBolts ahead by six.

Southern Illinois (24-23) strung together four straight two-out hits in the seventh to get their only run.

Welch (4-2) picked up the win while Kurt Heyer (4-4) allowed four runs for the loss.

Connor Bach was the highlight of game two as he struck out a career-high ten over six innings. The only hit he allowed was a Kurt Wertz infield single in the fourth inning.

The offense gave Bach some support in the third inning, loading the bases on two hits and a walk before Tim Zier cleared them with a three-run double. He scored on an error later in the inning.

In the fourth, Jonathan McCray added to the lead with an RBI single. Ronnie Healy doubled him in to make it 6-0.

Bach (2-1) picked up the game two win for the Bolts while Aaron Rozek (2-1) allowed six runs (five earned) in four innings to take the loss.

The ThunderBolts take the next four days off before returning to action on Friday night against the Joliet Slammers. It is Fright Night at Standard Bank Stadium, presented by Highline Auto Sales – Willowbrook and Svengoolie will be in attendance for a meet and greet with fireworks coming up after the game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
