Windy City drops a pair to Florence

Freedom 6, 4 Bolts 4, 2

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Florence Freedom scored late in both games as the ThunderBolts were swept in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. Florence took game one 6-4 in eight innings before winning game two 4-2.

The ThunderBolts (15-22) had the lead for most of game one after they scored a first-inning run. Coco Johnson singled and eventually came home on an Austin Gallagher groundout. They added a run in the third as Tyler Clark doubled and they ultimately loaded the bases with no outs. Clark scored on a Jonathan Garcia single but Johnson was thrown out at the plate on the play and they got just the one run.

Florence got (16-23) their first hit in the fourth inning, a Daniel Fraga double and he scored on a fielder’s choice. Sam Eberle’s solo homer the next inning tied the score.

Florence took the lead on a Gaby Juarbe two-run single in the seventh but the ThunderBolts answered when Max White homered in the bottom of the inning. Garcia’s sacrifice fly tied the game and sent it into extra innings. Justin Harris came up with a two-out, two-run single to secure the 6-4 win.

Ed Kohout (2-1) blew the save but picked up the win and Tommy Nance (0-1) took the loss.

Game two was a pitchers’ duel until the sixth. The Freedom began the inning with four straight hits to break a scoreless tie. Andrew Godbold’s RBI single started the scoring and the lead was extended on a Steve Carrillo two-run single. A run-scoring wild pitch made it 4-0.

Back-to-back homers in the bottom of the frame sparked the Bolts’ offense as Garcia and Austin Gallagher both went deep. The ThunderBolts put two runners on base but a double play ended the threat as the Freedom closed out the 4-2 win.

Tony Vocca (2-0) pitched 5.1 innings for the win and Jake Fisher (1-4) threw five shutout frames before allowing four runs in the sixth, taking the loss. Ethan Gibbons pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.

The ThunderBolts will start a six-game road trip in Evansville on Wednesday with a 5:35 doubleheader at Bosse Field. Austin Wright (2-5, 5.00) and Zak Wasserman (1-2, 5.87) will start the twin bill for Windy City. Both of Wednesday night’s games can be heard online at wcthunderbolts.com.
