Windy City splits a pair with Normal

Bolts 6, 4 Belters 2, 7

CRESTWOOD, IL – In a doubleheader split, the ThunderBolts defeated the Normal CornBelters 6-2 in game one before Normal took game two 7-4 Thursday night at Standard Bank Stadium.

Game one picked up where Wednesday’s game was suspended, with the ThunderBolts on top 1-0 in the second inning. The Bolts kept the offense rolling when play resumed, scoring twice in the second on RBI hits from Max White and Mike Torres.

They went on to score one more run in each of the next two innings on an Andrew Brauer sacrifice fly and a Kyle Robinson RBI single.

The CornBelters came as close as 5-2 when they got a run on a wild pitch in the fifth and loaded the bases, but Jessie Snodgrass struck out Pat McKenna to end that threat.

Windy City would put the game away with a Ryan Soares RBI single in the sixth that made the final score 6-2.

Jason Kafka (1-1) allowed one earned run in 2.1 relief innings for his first career win and Cullen Babin (4-2) allowed five runs in four innings for the loss. Snodgrass notched his first save.

In game two, Normal jumped out early to a 4-0 lead. The first five men reached base with Sam Judah and Aaron Dudley picking up RBI hits. The Belters also scored on a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch.

Windy City clawed its way back in to the game, scoring a run in the second on Davidson Peguero’s RBI hit and tying it with three runs in the fourth. With two outs, Max White walked and Mike McGuckin singled before Evan Button’s triple scored them both. Button crossed the plate on a wild pitch to tie it.

The CornBelters didn’t let the tie stand as they immediately came back with three in the fifth. With two outs and two on, Ozney Guillen came up with the go-ahead two-run single before he scored on a Tyler Shover base hits to cap the scoring at 7-4.

Jason Postill (3-0) retired the only batter he faced for the win and Daniel Cropper (2-6) took the loss, going 4.1 innings and giving up five runs. Alan Oaks pitched the seventh for his seventh save.

The ThunderBolts will head out on a season-long 12-game roadtrip beginning Friday in Traverse City. In game one against the Beach Bums, the Bolts will send Jake Fisher (2-6, 5.33) to the mound against Traverse City’s Casey Delgado (5-2, 2.68).
