MARION, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts allowed eight first inning runs in an 8-2 loss to the Southern Illinois Miners on Sunday at Rent One Ballpark. The loss allowed the Miners (29-24) to capture the three-game series, two games to one, over the Bolts (20-32).

Bolts starter Kenny Mathews had a runner at second with two outs and no runs across before the Miners began the first inning attack. Jared Mang began a string of eight straight hitters reaching. Mang collected an RBI single to make it 1-0. The two big blasts in the eight-run inning came from Anthony Brocato and Carson Bartels. Brocato hit a three-run homer and Bartels smashed a grand slam to left.

Mathews (3-7) was done after the first with a final line of eight runs on seven hits in a losing decision. Mathews’ mound opponent Zac Westcott (7-1) twirled seven one-run innings to earn the win.

The Bolts bullpen threw seven shutout, two-hit innings. Layne Schnitz-Paxton, Kyle Johnson, Ryan Hare and Cal Djuraskovic combined to keep the Bolts hopes alive. However, the offense mustered two runs, a sacrifice fly from Dan Robinson and an RBI single from Zach Racusin.
