ThunderBolts lose seventh straight, 10-0 to Miners

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts were shutout for the second straight game as the Southern Illinois Miners dealt them their seventh straight loss, 7-0 at Standard Bank Stadium Thursday night.

The Miners (8-4) got on the board in the top of the second, beginning the inning with three straight hits. Wendell Fairley and Niko Vasquez singled and Jerrud Sabourin doubled to drive in the first run. Vasquez would score on a Jon Minucci sacrifice fly.

They made it 5-0 the following inning, when Fairley picked up an RBI single and Sabourin doubled home two more runs.

The Bolts (3-8) had a few early scoring chances, but failed to capitalize, leaving a runner at second in the first inning and stranding runners at the corners in the second. Overall, they went 0-5 with men in scoring position in the game.

The Miners’ seventh inning featured five singles as they added three runs to their lead. Steve Marino and Brendan Slattery picked up RBIs. They finished their scoring with a two-run ninth. Sabourin walked and scored on a Slattery base hit and Marino singled, scoring on Aaron Gates’s groundout to make it 10-0.

Miguel Ramirez (1-2) pitched seven shutout innings for the win. He allowed only four hits and at one point, retired 15 out of 16 hitters. Jake Fisher (1-2) gave up five runs on seven hits over four innings in taking the loss.

The ThunderBolts will welcome the Evansville Otters to town for a three-game series on Friday. Austin Wright (1-1, 4.50) will get the start for the Bolts in the series opener and he will be opposed by Evansville’s Trevor Walch (0-1, 3.27). It is Budweiser Fill ‘R Up Friday with special drink deals throughout the night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard at wcthunderbolts.com.
