Mejia Magic, Bolts win 5-4

CRESTWOOD -- The first game of the 2007 Frontier League Championship rematch between the Windy City ThunderBolts (35-31) and the Washington Wild Things (35-31) featured a bench-clearing brawl, dominating pitching, and most importantly, a five-run ninth inning comeback by the 'Bolts to beat the Wild Things 5-4 on Saturday night in front of 2,042 fans at Standard Bank Stadium.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Windy City scored five runs to come back and beat starter Brooks Dunn (1-3) with Gilberto Mejia delivering the game-winning hit, a two out, two-run single to right-center field.

Phil Hawke was hit by a pitch with one out in the ninth before Wes Long delivered a single to start the rally. One out later Brett Amyx hit an RBI-double. Danny Sawyer then reached on an error by third basemen Josh Euchers before an RBI-single by Sullivan. Mejia then delivered the game-winning hit.

"I was trying to put the ball in play," Mejia said. "I didn't want to do too much and just took what he gave me. I stopped at first base to watch Mike (Sullivan) score."

The game was marred in the top of the first inning after a bench-clearing brawl delayed the game for several minutes. Windy City starter Ross Stout had Washington leadoff hitter Chris Sidick picked off between second and third as a rundown ensued. Ross Stout received the ball from Gilberto Mejia when Sidick plowed into Stout to knock the pitcher to the ground. Sidick was out, but the hard play caused Stout and Sidick to exchange punches. Josh Horn and Mike Coles were ejected for Windy City while Sidick was thrown out for the Wild Things.

Stout stayed in the game and lasted 8.0 innings giving up four runs on five hits while striking out nine. Matt Petty (2-4) pitched the final three outs in the ninth to earn the win after striking out the side.

Dunn threw his first complete game of the season going 8.2 innings giving up five runs, one earned, on nine hits while striking out four.

With the win, the 'Bolts move into a tie for the Frontier League Wild Card with Washington. The two teams will play again Sunday night at 6:05 with the matchup being RHP J.J. Hollenbeck (4-3, 3.40) for the Wild Things against RHP Amos Ramon (4-3, 4.29) for the ThunderBolts. It will be another Standard Bank Sunday as all fans with a Standard Bank coupon can receive $2 off the price of admission on a lower level seat.
